Nice Everything You Have There: Mindful Minecraft

2013-03-08_22.06.42

Did you know that Minecraft has a lot to teach us about how we pay attention to, get distracted from, and cope with things? Embedded in the design and the lore of the game are nuggets of philosophy, neuroscience, and psychology. From work/life balance to physical and mental health to the meaning of life Minecraft has something to teach us.

That’s why I decided to present on mindfulness and Minecraft this year at SXSW.  If you were there, thanks for coming, but if you weren’t fret not, for David Smith of Austin, TX was kind enough to videotape the event on his iPhone.  David, thanks for your stamina!  The video is broken into 5 parts, and I’ll include the prezi for you to play with as well:

  1. Hi Mike,
I am so glad I found the videos of your SXSW presentation on here! I was at SX and really wanted to see your presentation but could not get over to Palmer in time! I am a speech pathologist/autism consultant turned iPad trainer and I loved your thoughts on mindfulness, theory of mind, etc on Mindcraft. I spoke on a panel at SXSW on Apps for Autism and was thrilled with the whole experience. I can’t wait for next year!
I also have a 9 yr old son who LOVES Minecraft!

  2. Hello Mike, this was such an enlightening presentation. I am in such amazement by this field of therapy. I especially was surprised about the interruption piece. I interrupt my son frequently, now I will be more mindful of that. The distraction bit was also interesting, once you put it
in prospective. I would love to observe a gaming therapy session. Can I share this with the group?
